Natasha-Bammer

Synopsis

Two lovers strive to trade a grim past for a bright future in this story of bittersweet yearning.

Tina Jenson belongs to the same social stratum as Harris Chapman, but he’s out of her league—at least that’s what she thinks before they jump in bed together. It’s the perfect night, but when she overhears crude, hurtful comments the next morning, she can’t get away fast enough.

Ten years later, Tina’s life is a mess. That night with Harris didn’t just hurt her feelings; it started a cascade of disappointment and heartbreak. Every time she bumps into Harris, her heart twists inside out. She still wants him, but she’s harbouring a painful secret from their night together that she’s not ready to reveal.

Crossed signals, high-society whispers, and shame have kept Tina and Harris apart for years, but deep down, they’re hungry for each other and eager to write their own rules. Can they let go of the past and find their way back to each other, or are the barriers between them too high and too strong?

“5 -Then, Now, and Forever Stars!”

As with all of Natasha Anders’ books, I always feel a whirlwind of emotions when I’ve finished one of her stories.

Her characters are so damn complex and layered.
The characters and histories are heartbreaking, sad and painful.
But, the journey to forgiveness and healing is SO worth the read.

 photo giphy.gif

This story is no exception.
I absolutely adored Tina’s character. She went through so much at such a young age, and
the consequences of that “one night” still affect her.
The strength it took to persevere (even though she was so broken) was inspiring.
Unfortunately, in order for her to survive, she had to build an almost indestructible wall around her heart.
It was the only way she could cope and semi-function for the last 10 years.

 photo nofeelingsnoattachments.gif

Until… she started spending time with Harris.
There is so much history and hurt between the two of them.
Some things are just unforgivable, and Harris doesn’t know the whole story about what happened after that “one night”.

 photo lookatyouandnotbehurtbyyou.gif

So many secrets are screaming to come to light and now is the time.

I loved Harris! He was such a great character.
His perseverance, gentleness and love for Tina was beautiful.

 photo onemorechance.gif

I really enjoyed this story.
It is a story of loss, regret, forgiveness, love and learning to move forward and second chances.

Excerpt

“How you’d like your steak cooked?” Harris asked.

“Medium rare.” Tina retreated to one of the mismatched tall stools at the breakfast bar and clambered up onto it. She watched him competently move around the kitchen, cleaning and washing the spuds before readying them to go into the oven. He hummed softly beneath his breath as he worked … the tune was very familiar, but because his humming was so off-key, she couldn’t quite place it. The title hovered on the edge of her brain.

“Ugh, what is the name of that song? It’s driving me crazy!”

He looked up, startled. “What song?”

“The one you’re humming.”

“I’m not sure. Wait…” He hummed again and then breathed a few lyrics in a falsetto voice that reduced Tina to stitches. He repeated the same two words over and over again. And the words, combined with the seriously off-key tune, were definitely familiar to her.

He shook his head before saying, “I’m not sure what that song’s called … hey, stop laughing. I know for a fact your singing voice isn’t much better.” His offended observation just made her laugh harder. “Do you know the song title?”

“It’s…” She gasped for breath, then broke down into gales of laughter again when she glanced up into his expectant face. She folded her arms on the countertop and dropped her head for a moment as she tried to bring her giggles under control. Once the laughter abated, she lifted her gaze to his smiling eyes—he didn’t really look offended at all, just gently amused. “I’m sorry. It’s not your singing … okay, it kind of is. But I think I found it funnier that you were asking for the song’s title when you k-kept…” She inhaled deeply when it felt like the laughter was threatening again. “Kept singing it in that godawful voice.”

“What do you mean?”

“The song’s called ‘No One,’ Harris. By Alicia Keys.”

“Oh.” He twisted his face into a sheepish grimace before chuckling, the sound deep and masculine. “That makes sense. I like that song.”

She did too. In fact…

“We danced to that song. On my twentieth birthday,” he said, his voice quietly reminiscent. She nodded, surprised that he remembered the song, considering the state he had been in that night.

“I know.” Danced. And then kissed. Her very first kiss. The song had come to mean so much more to her, but she determinedly tamped down those particular memories.

Amusement fled, and they exchanged an uncomfortable look before both averted their eyes. Silence descended, their troubled history once again asserting itself between them. Tina nervously drummed her fingers on the Formica countertop.

“Tina.” His voice sounded anguished. “If I could do it all over again…”

She stopped tapping and lifted her hand to prevent him from saying anything further.

“Let’s not go into this again, Harris.” She watched him screw his eyes shut as he battled with what looked like some pretty powerful emotions.

“Damn.” The word was soft and fierce and sounded like a prayer.

“Why don’t we…” She paused as she considered the words she was about to utter. No matter which way she phrased them, they would seem like an olive branch. And she wasn’t sure if she wanted to extend one yet. Or ever. Still, she was in his—temporary—home, about to break bread with him, so to speak, and maybe—for her emotional health—it would be best. “Why don’t we set this aside? For today at least.”

She watched his throat move as he swallowed and then shifted her gaze to his navy-blue eyes, which were alight with gratitude.

“I’d like that,” he said gruffly, offering her the tiniest of smiles.

Tina heaved a relieved sigh, feeling lighter than she had in months. Possibly years.

“Good. Now, how about you get those steaks on? I’m starving.”

An all-new STANDALONE from New York Times bestselling author Julia Kent
Synopsis

It all started with the wrong Help Wanted ad. Of course, it did.

banner

I’m a professional fluffer. It’s NOT what you think. I stage homes for a living. Real estate agents love me, and my work stands on its own merits.

Sigh. Get your mind out of the gutter. Go ahead. Laugh. I’ll wait.

See? That’s the problem. My career has used the term “fluffer” for decades. I didn’t even know there was a more… lascivious definition of the term.

Until it was too late.

The ad for a “professional fluffer” on Craigslist seemed like divine intervention. My last unemployment check was in the bank. I was desperate. Rent was due. The ad said cash paid at the end of the day. The perfect job!

Staging homes means showing your best angle. The same principle applies in making a certain kind of movie. Turns out a “fluffer” doesn’t arrange decorative pillows on a couch.

They arrange other soft, round-ish objects.

The job isn’t hard. Er, I mean, it is — it’s about being hard. Or, well… helping other people to be hard.

Oh, man…

And that’s the other problem. A man. No, not one of the stars on the movie set. Will Lotham – my high school crush. The owner of the house where we’re filming. Illegally. In a vacation rental.

By the time the cops show up, what I thought was just a great house staging gig turned into a nightmare involving pictures of me with an undressed star, Will rescuing me from an arrest, and a humiliating lesson in my own naivete.

My job turned out to be so much harder than I expected. But you know what’s easier than I ever imagined?

Having all my dreams come true.

“5 – I always know where I’m going with you STARS!”

Wow!
This was such a funny, smart, fun read!
I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in this story and its characters.
It was fun reading about Will and Mallory reconnecting after 14 years (even if it was under the most unusual circumstances) and developing a new, fresh adult relationship.

Fluffy-IG-ad-2

The beginning of this book had me hooked right from the start.
What started as a job opportunity for Mallory Monahan quickly turns into one of the most embarrassing situations that could happen to a person.
This is also when she reconnects with Will.

Great storyline and characters.
Wonderful read!

“Do you use the proper terms for everything, Mallory?” He makes an inarticulate sound as I peel the gauze off the cut, wiping gently. “You call your pretty place a vulva, right? And you use the word vagina.”

“’Pretty place’?”

He shrugs.

“And yes, I do. Vulva and vagina. And then there’s the clitoris,” I say primly.

“What’s that?”

“What’s what?”

“A clitoris. Never heard of it.”

I freeze and look down at him. Bright eyes meet mine. Is he serious?

“The clitoris is a nerve cluster above the opening to the vagina,” I begin, taking a breath to continue my impromptu human sexuality lecture, because when a man tells you they don’t know what a clitoris is, you educate them immediately.

For the sisterhood. All the women Will is going to sleep with from here on out will thank me later.

He starts to laugh. I’m so tempted to pour the small bottle of isopropyl alcohol directly on his wound, but I’m a kind, compassionate woman, so instead, I dab it on with a swab.

“OW!” he bellows.

“Sorry.”

“You’re not sorry at all.”

“I’m sorry for your sex partners that you have no idea what a clitoris is, Will.”

“I know what it is. And my tongue knows how to find one. Blindfolded.”

“Why would you blindfold your tongue?”

Author Bio

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men’s room toilet (and he isn’t a billionaire). She lives in New England with her husband and three kids in a household where Julia apparently is the only one who possesses the gene necessary to change empty toilet paper rolls.

“5 – Your Power Lies Within You STARS!”

POWER CAN CHANGE A PERSON.

REVENGE CAN SHAPE A PERSON.

DANGER CAN BRING THEM TOGETHER.

This was such a good read and a great start to a new series!

The story is about Molly Sullivan coming into her power and her transcendence into becoming a powerful witch.

One of the major themes of this story is that Molly’s power (not only as a witch but as a person) lies within her.

No matter what anybody says to her, or does to her, or whatever else is happening in the world…this power is Hers, and Hers alone.
Completely and forever, all she has to do is
claim it.

Josiah Mason is a powerful witch and leader of a secret coven.
He has focused all his time, energy and money for many years on a literal “witch hunt”.
He’s also the one person who can help Molly.

I loved the complicated characters and their different backgrounds.

Thea Harrison did a wonderful job of developing the characters and bringing the story beautifully together at the end.

I found this book to be a much darker, edgier story than I’m used to reading by Ms Harrison, and I loved it.
I found the emotions between the characters raw which made them more likeable (in my opinion).

I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading paranormal-urban fantasy romance.

Time (Law of Physics, #3; Hypothesis, #2.3) by Penny Reid

LOP_TIME

review banner

Time is the third and final book in the LAW OF PHYSICS trilogy and in my opinion, this is the best book/series Penny has written to date.

There are so many things I want to say about this book but unfortunately, I don’t think I can without adding any spoilers to my review.
What I will say is that I think Penny has written the perfect protagonists.
Yes, they have flaws and are by far not perfect BUT, what makes them so extraordinary is their bravery, honesty, and determination to be themselves regardless of what “the world” says they should “be, say or do”.

This book was so inspiring and empowering.
Penny has once again written a smart, funny, book that is thought-provoking, and possibly world-changing if people were open to discussing the topics she mentioned in her story all while writing a pretty damn fantastic romance at the same time.
I think Penny’s a unicorn.

I loved Mona and Abram. Just everything about them.
They were amazing characters.

Their journey was an amazing one and so worth the wait between books.
This series is one of my favourites this year.

If you’re looking for a smart, funny, sexy read… then look no further.
READ THIS SERIES!

“4.5 – I’d do anything for you Stars!”

This is the third book in Marquita Valentine’s Billionaire’sseries.
It can be read as a standalone, but I think the reader would appreciate the history between Drew (Connor’s older brother) and Connor and the crazy situation Drew had with his own wife in the previous book.

This was a fun book to read.
I love the “friends to lovers” trope, it’s one of my favourites to read and Marquita did a fantastic job of writing the characters wariness of crossing “that line” when they realize that there is more to their relationship than what they first started with and how it’s grown into something beautiful and precious.

I loved that Connor and Faith had known it other since they were 12 years old and met at summer camp. It was there that they became best friends, and that their friendship endured through the years and through many trials (mostly Connor’s) to become solid and unbreakable…. even priceless.

Synopsis

Book 2 in The Honey Badger Chronicles

Petite, kind, brilliant, and young, Stevie is nothing like the usual women bodyguard Shen Li is interested in. Even more surprising, the youngest of the lethal, ball-busting, and beautiful MacKilligan sisters is terrified of bears. But she’s not terrified of pandas. She loves pandas.

Which means that whether Shen wants her to or not, she simply won’t stop cuddling him. He isn’t some stuffed Giant Panda, ya know! He is a Giant Panda shifter. He deserves respect and personal space. Something that little hybrid is completely ignoring.

But Stevie has a way of finding trouble. Like going undercover to take down a scientist experimenting on other shifters. For what, Shen doesn’t want to know, but they’d better find out. And fast. Stevie might be the least violent of the honey badger sisters, but she’s the most dangerous to Shen’s peace of mind. Because she has absolutely no idea how much trouble they’re in . . . or just how damn adorable she is.

“5- Lions, and tigers, and panda bears…OH MY! Stars”

Nobody writes strong, sassy, sarcastic characters like Shelly Laurenston.

I don’t know where she gets her ideas for her stories or how she writes her dialogues, but I know I like it.

This book had me laughing out loud more than once.
The situations these characters find themselves in and the shenanigans they pull are a little over the top, but they work.
This was a fun read.

Stevie and Shen were a great couple.
They were perfectly matched even though he didn’t know that he and Stevie were a couple for a better part of the book.

Great story!
Great writing!
Amazing characters!

Excerpt

Unedited/Unproofed

When Shen found the little rip in the wallpaper behind his head and began to pull at it—he thought maybe something was behind it and he wanted to see!—the pretty receptionist who had become a lot less nice the longer Shen sat in her waiting room came over and slapped his hand away.

“Can you not sit still for three minutes?”

“It’s been like ten hours.”

“Less than an hour. Just sit. And stop playing with everything. You’re worse than the grizzlies!”

Still bored, Shen took out his phone again and went to his favorite news sites, then checked his texts. A full-human woman he had been trying to set up a date with had finally gotten back to him but—to his horror—she was suggesting dinner with her parents. Shen couldn’t tell if she was trying to get him to run away screaming or was seriously asking him to dinner with her parents. For their first date.

Unsure, he forwarded the text to his two sisters. Kiki responded first with one emoji after another. All of them suggesting she was laughing hysterically at him.

Zhen texted back a simple message: RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.

Shen was trying to figure out how to nicely decline the date since he didn’t like the idea of being one of those guys who simply didn’t respond. He had two sisters who had been forced to deal with assholes like that for years, and he wasn’t about to become one himself.

But before he could gently explain that he had to move back to China for the foreseeable future, the three sisters returned to the waiting

The sisters stood silently as Stevie’s doctor arranged additional appointments and handed her a prescription slip. “You can get this filled downstairs. You’ll need to use our pharmacy, of course.”

Stevie nodded, but that was it.

Once done, and without a word, they headed to the elevator and went down to the pharmacy on the first floor. Another twenty minutes there to get the medication and then they were on the road heading back to Queens.

The sisters said nothing the entire way home, each looking out a window.

Shen stopped at the McDonald’s near the Queen’s house and picked up a few burgers and several large orders of fries. Each sister declined to order with a shake of her head and continued silence.

He parked the SUV in front of the house and everyone got out. Shen dropped off his food on the coffee table in the living room. He walked to the first-floor bathroom, washed his hands, then went to the refrigerator in the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water. On his way through the dining room, he grabbed one of his duffle bags filled with bamboo stalks and returned to the living room.

Putting the food out and turning on the television, Shen only took one bite of his Quarter Pounder before Stevie suddenly walked into the living room, turned, and proceeded to scream back toward the dining room.

Shen tried to understand her, but then Charlie and Max joined in and the three sisters stood right in the archway, just screeching.

Screeching so intensely, the veins on Stevie’s neck bulged, appearing ready to explode. Her face was beet red and she was talking with her hands. Well . . . screeching with her hands. All three gestured wildly but Shen had no idea what anyone was saying because they were not only screeching but screeching fast. Like speed-screeching.

After about three minutes of this, Stevie suddenly leaned her head back, and the roar that exploded from her throat shook the windows and . . . maybe . . . the entire house? Shen wasn’t positive but the roar was powerful.

Charlie and Max stopped their own screeching. Stevie lowered her head, and, slicing her hands through the air, announced, “That. Is. It!” There was a long silence, and the MacKilligans stared at each other until Stevie added, “You both know what I’ll do. And you both know I’ll do it. We’re not having this discussion again.”

“I need to bake,” Charlie announced, heading to the kitchen.

Max just walked away, the back door slamming shut a minute later.

Stevie, her jaw tight, stood in the archway for another two or three minutes until she finally sighed and swung her giant backpack off her shoulder. Digging around for a bit, she eventually pulled out the paper bag she’d gotten from the pharmacy. She took out the bottle of pills and read the label.

“I need to take this with food.”

Shen picked up one of the Quarter Pounders and held it out to her, but Stevie’s nose crinkled in distaste. “No thanks.”

She turned, started toward the kitchen. Stopped when she heard pots banging. Spun around and headed toward the front door, but the local stray cat came charging in from one of the open windows, followed by a shifted Max, who didn’t seem to care it was the middle of the day.

“Leave that cat alone, Max!”

A few seconds later, they heard Charlie bark, “Max!” and then the back door opened and closed, probably meaning the cat and the badger had been tossed out of the house.

With a long sigh, Stevie faced Shen and he motioned to the pile of burgers he had on the coffee table, again offering what he had.

Stevie came over and picked one up. “Thank you,” she said with a sigh and moved back to the other side of the room, heading toward one of the wing-backed chairs across from Shen. She was turning to sit down when big hands slapped against the window, causing Stevie to scream and drop the burger as one of the MacKilligans’ grizzly neighbours put his face close to the glass and yelled, “Is your sister baking? I thought I heard baking noises!”

Shen shook his head, annoyed with his fellow bear. He would think the locals would have stopped doing that sort of thing by now. The MacKilligan sisters were not the kind of women a bear, cat, wolf, or man would want to startle. They made the horror of grizzlyboar rage seem like a toddler’s temper tantrum. Not only because Stevie shifted into . . . whatever the hell it was she shifted into, but also because her sisters didn’t really bother with shifting when they were startled or confronted. Charlie had a way with firearms that he hadn’t seen even from trained military professionals, while Max did love her edge weapons. She could slice and dice like an old-school butcher, but she moved like a dancer or gymnast. And she really enjoyed it. She enjoyed hurting those who hurt or attempted to hurt those she loved.

That made her more than a predator. It made her a killing machine. A shark in a honey badger body.

Shen picked up the SUV keys, his wallet, and sunglasses, and walked over to a panting Stevie, who was trying desperately not to panic. He slung her backpack over his shoulder and took hold of her arm.

“Come on,” he said, pulling her along behind him.

“Where are we going?”

“To get you some food and a break from . . . everything.” He glanced back at her. “I think after the day you’ve had, we can both agree that you deserve it.”

Let me start by saying that I know, I KNOW, that I should NEVER start a Penny Reid book in the late afternoon. I know this since I read all her books. (Not unless I’m at home alone, not having any motherly-wifey-worky commitments.)

But, that is exactly what I did.
I thought I was being such a smarty-pants and convinced myself that I could put the book down after supper. Spend some quality time with my husband, and that I’d “save” the book and finish it tomorrow.

I went to bed (I consciously left my kindle in the kitchen) knowing that I would be tempted to get up in the middle of the night, dim the light on my kindle, and read under the covers until; a) I fell asleep or; b) I finished the book (probably around 4 am…been there-done that).

What happened instead, as you can imagine is much worse.
I woke up about 4 times throughout the night thinking about the different scenarios as to what would happen between Mona and Abram.
All of these scenarios were the worst-case, of course. Doomsday-apocalyptic even…poor Mona and Abram. The things you went through in my mind. (I think I do this in an effort to prepare myself for the worst and the cliffhanger ending that I knew was coming.)

I finally was able to finish Space this afternoon, and I LOVED it (your scenarios are way better than mine, Penny! That is why you’re the Overlord, and I’m a mere minion. 🙂

Brilliantly written and executed!
I was so scared and worried about how Abram was going to deal with Mona.
Would he be vengeful?
Would he seek retribution?
He was obviously distraught.
He thought he was made a fool of by Lisa and Mona. A big joke.
I am glad that he did ask “why”?

In true Penny fashion, she was true to her characters.
They were smart, kind, honourable, real and quirky.

Mona-

Abram-

I think one of my most favourite scenes I’ve ever read is when Mona asked to hear Abram’s heartbeat.

To me, this is perhaps one of the most intimate scenes I’ve read because of its purity, trust, and softness.

I LOVED Mona and Abram together!
I can’t wait to see what happens next!
The anticipation is killing me (not really, but it’s causing a little discomfort).

I’ve pre-ordered the next book so that I can read that puppy as soon as it lands in my kindle.

Kudos Penny for another great story!
