RELEASING THE DEMONS (Order of the Senary, #1) by L.D. Rose

Releasing the DemonsReleasing the Demons by L.D. Rose
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

L.D. Rose has created an incredible world where Vampires have come out of hiding and established their dominance.
The Vampire’s now rule the night and humans are left to live, survive and pick up the pieces of death and destruction left for them come morning.

This was a dark, edgy story that was well developed and well written.
I loved the world this author has created and the “super-heroes” she’s created to combat the vampires.
“The Order of the Senary” are complex characters, each with their own demons and special gifts.
They are also honourable, loyal, and determined warriors that fight for what’s right and just.

The chemistry and sexual tension between Blaze and Val was off the charts.
When they first met they didn’t trust or even like one another, but once they starting working together and getting to know one another, the most incredible thing happened…they began to love and heal one another.

My favourite part of the book was when Val was shaving Blaze.
There’s something so erotic and intimate in this act.

I loved how their relationship developed and how it wasn’t a “love at first sight” but something that was worth fighting for and dying for.

A great first book for a new series!
I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.

BLACK BULLET (Order of the Senary, #2) by L.D. Rose

Black BulletBlack Bullet by L.D. Rose
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“5-Never give up on something you can’t go a day without thinking about Stars!”

I don’t really read dark, edgy paranormal romance, but the synopsis for this book and the first book in the series (Releasing the Demons) had me curious and intrigued.

I’m so glad I took the chance and agreed to read and review this book!

This is an urban fantasy/paranormal romance.
The world the author has created is where the Vampires have made themselves know to the human race and now they want to rule.
Millions were killed during the initial insurgency.

The Vampires rule the night and the human spend their time coping with the loss from the nights and fighting the Vampires in order to survive.

In order to combat the Vampires, the Government experimented and created genetic hybrids (half human-half vampire) that have special “gifts” that make them superior to even the vampires.

The hybrids are thought to have been destroyed because of the uproar about the genetically modified embryos, so they remain as a secret black-ops project knows as the “Order of the Senary”.

This story is about Jon Kerr, a former marine, FBI agent and now a “vampire, but not a vampire” who was saved by the Order because of his former work with them while he was an FBI agent, and it’s also about Lawan, the only female hybrid left alive.

Their story is tragic, dark and edgy but oh so worth the read.

I loved it!
This arc has so many possibilities and so much potential.
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

I’m so thrilled that the author reached out to me and asked me to review for her!

Synopsis

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, is thrust centre stage into an aeons-old prophecy…

Midnight and dawn, Elena’s wings are unique among angelkind—and now they are failing. The first mortal to be turned into an immortal in angelic memory, she’s regressing. Becoming more and more human. Easier to hurt. Easier to kill.

Elena and Raphael must unearth the reason for the regression before Elena falls out of the sky. Yet even as they fight a furious battle for Elena’s very survival, violent forces are gathering across the world. In China, the Archangel Favashi is showing the first signs of madness. In New York, a mysterious sinkhole filled with lava swallows a man whole. In Africa, torrential monsoon rains flood rolling deserts. And in Elena’s mind whispers a haunting voice that isn’t her own.

This time, survival may not be possible…not even for the consort of an archangel.

This is the best, of the best of the Guild Hunter Series!

Oh… the ending.
Be prepared. I was shocked and surprised by it.
I really liked how the ending was narrated by the Primary of the Legion.

I love the potential this story arc has (so many exciting possibilities).
I can’t wait to see what happens next, and I can’t wait to see the full potential of the Legion and discover their past and memories.

Raphael’s desperation to find a cure for Elena was heartbreaking and so honest and true.
His character seemed to devolve right along with Elena’s body.
The emphasis on Raphael and Elena’s vows of “we” and “together” in this battle against the unknown forces and prophecies is what made this story so amazing and the reason why I read Nalini Singh’s books.

 photo teaser 2.jpg

I know many people had a hard time with the ending of this book, but I believe that only good things are going to come with this new arc.

Amazing read!

Favourite Quotes:

“Nothing will take you from me.
His fingers dug into her flesh.
Not even the Cascade.
The wind and the rain in her mind, a relentless storm she never wanted to escape.
He was hers and she was his, and together they were a unit that could not be torn apart by forces either mortal or immortal.”
-Raphael

“Enough of this.” His consort placed her palms against his glowing wings.
“You don’t have to save me, Archangel.
We are us.
That’s how we fight this. Together.” One hand against his heart.
“You’re a little bit mortal and I’m a tiny bit immortal. We did that to each other. We created the wildfire. We beat Lijuan. We’ll beat this together. The one thing we won’t do is surrender who we are to this menace.”
-Elena

“I will undo the universe for you.”
Tear it to pieces, leave it as broken as his heart would be if he didn’t have Elena.
“Tell Cassandra I don’t believe in the predestination crap, either.”

my-review

Lionheart, the third and final book in the Moonshadow trilogy is Thea Harrison’s writing at her best.
This book… the writing, story and characters are the reason I started reading Ms Harrsion’s work in the first place and continue to “1-chick” her books as soon as they’re available.
She’s one of the few authors I tri-buy (paperback, digital, and audio).

Oberon, King of the Dark Fae was an amazing character to read.
Of all the characters in the Elder Races books, Oberon is one of the most powerful, intelligent, loyal, and loved by his people… but it is also these characteristics also make him one of the deadliest as well.

lionheart teasers from th 8

Even when he was losing his battle against the poison inside of his body, he knew enough to put himself in stasis in order to survive, but also so he wouldn’t destroy the ones he loved.

The other protagonist in the story, Dr Kathryn Shaw was the perfect character to compliment him.
She was strong, intelligent, loyal and compassionate.

The chemistry, interest, awareness, respect and trust gradually grew between Oberon and Kathryn, but once it did, this couple was unstoppable.

I loved reading Oberon and Kathryn’s story.

This was an amazing read and a wonderful conclusion to the Moonshadow series.
I highly recommend this book.

KILL THE QUEEN (CROWN OF SHARDS, #1)  by Jennifer Estep

kill-the-queen-blog-tour-banner-1

Jennifer Estep is a New York Times, USA Today, and international bestselling author prowling the streets of her imagination in search of her next fantasy idea.

Jennifer writes the Crown of Shards epic fantasy series. Kill the Queen, book #1, will be released on Oct. 2.

The Crown of Shards series focuses on Everleigh Blair, a member of the royal family who is distantly in line for the throne of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. But when the unthinkable happens, Evie finds herself fighting for her life—both inside and outside the gladiator arena.

kill-the-queen-cover-1

SYNOPSIS

The thrilling first novel in the Crown of Shards epic fantasy series combines magic, murder, and adventure when an unlikely member of the royal family suddenly becomes a contender in a clash for the crown . . .

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten.

But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.

Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of combat, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future—or if she even has one—Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move.

But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

“5 – I DANCE TO A DIFFERENT BEAT – STARS!”

Just – WOW!

If I could have given this book a higher than 5-star rating, I most certainly would have.

This book was an incredible story of lies, treachery, deceit, and hidden agendas.
There were so many twists and turns and unexpected circumstances and secrets that were wonderfully executed and beautifully revealed at the end.

teaser-2

This story had an amazing ensemble of characters who played their roles perfectly and flawlessly right till the bitter end.

It was all about the long game, and if there was anything Evie learned from living in the shadow of the castle for fifteen years, it was that she learned how to execute her long game exquisitely.

Evie was an amazing character to read about and she developed beautifully through the story.

I loved how she found her voice, courage, and strength to stand up and be the person… the leader she was meant to be and finally say “no more”.

Great story and an amazing start to a new series!

EXCERPT

Two hours later, I poured the last of the cranberry-apple filling into the final pie crust, then reached for the orange flakes.

“Whether you’re a cook master or not, the secret is not to overdo the orange,” Isobel instructed, the same way she had on the previous pies. “Most people shake the flakes on like they’re common salt. But too much orange, and that’s all you’ll taste. So go around the pie once, gently tapping on the jar three times with your index finger. That’s the perfect amount.”

I did as she said, watching the tiny, delicate granules melt into the fruit filling like perfumed snowflakes. Then I drew in a deep breath, letting the air roll in over my tongue and tasting all the scents in it. The buttery crust, the sugary fruit, the hint of orange that curled through it all. Delicious aromas that would bubble up and become even more pronounced, fragrant, and intense as this pie and the others baked.

Despite my own condescending view of my mutt magic, my enhanced sense of smell was one of the reasons why I had always gravitated toward Isobel and the kitchen. All the sweet scents here made the bitter reality of my life a little easier to bear.

“Perfect! That’s my girl.” Isobel beamed at me, and I smiled back at her.

She arranged a few strips of crust on top of the filling, creating a pretty lattice pattern, then slid the pie into the oven. Isobel had taken pity and had helped me make the pie crusts, although she had insisted on my preparing the cranberry-apple filling, orange flakes and all, claiming that it was the most important part.

I often helped Isobel, as I enjoyed spending time with her, and the kitchen was a welcome refuge from other, less-friendly sections of the palace. She had slowly turned me into a decent cook, despite my not being a master. But after making so many pies in a row, I had all the ingredients, measurements, and motions memorized, and I felt like I could craft them in my sleep now. Just as I could bow, curtsy, dance, and make polite, inane chitchat in several languages. And those were just some of the many trivial skills that I’d learned as the unofficial royal stand-in.

While Queen Cordelia and the rest of my Blair cousins were dealing with ambassadors and the like, I was attending all the functions they could not, due to their oh-so-important and exceedingly busy schedules.

Breakfast recitals, charity luncheons, afternoon teas. I went to all those and more every week, both here at the palace and out in the city. Most of the time, it wasn’t so bad. Usually, all I had to do was smile, nod, and shake hands, along with thanking people for their time, admiring their music, artwork, or goods, and giving short and exceptionally vague speeches about how disappointed Queen Cordelia was that she couldn’t attend herself. At the very least, I almost always got a free meal out of the proceedings.
